What's Actually in Your San Diego Tap Water

San Diego’s municipal water meets every current legal standard. That is not the same thing as ideal. Here is what testing consistently shows in San Diego County homes.

Hard water

San Diego water averages 16.3 grains per gallon, classified as ‘very hard.’ At this level, scale accumulates in water heaters, pipes, and appliances; soap stops lathering; skin and hair feel dry.

Chloramine disinfection

San Diego uses chloramine (chlorine plus ammonia) instead of free chlorine. Standard pitcher and faucet filters do not remove chloramine. It takes catalytic carbon or reverse osmosis.

PFAS ('forever chemicals')

PFAS have been detected in San Diego water, particularly near Camp Pendleton, MCAS Miramar, and other military installations where firefighting foam was historically used. PFAS do not break down in the environment or in the body. Reverse osmosis removes up to 99%.

Chromium-6

Detected in San Diego water at up to 0.36 ppb. That is roughly 18 times the level many researchers consider safe. The EPA does not currently regulate chromium-6 specifically.
