The Six Methods To Remove Fluoride In Water!

Especially Removing Fluoride In Drinking Water!

Four Methods That Work In Southern California

Plus, Two That Are A Waste Of Your Money!

Water Distillation - Not Common - The Best At Removing Fluoride

Fluoride Removal: 100% Moving Water – 100%+ Standing Water

Commercially: POE - Rarely Used

Residentially: Point of Use (POU) - Available : Point of Entry (POE) - Not Used

Residential Water Distillers remove all the contaminants from your water, 100%.  They do this by heating up the water until it evaporates and then it collects the steam and through condensation the pure water is collected and stored.   Distillers are limited in how much water they can produce in a day, they are generally on used as a counter-top unit, POU.

The major benefits of Distillation are: 1. the water taste spectacular, 2. the water is absolutely pure and healthy.

The major drawbacks of Distillation systems are: 1. they are limited in the amount of water made per day,  2. only used as POU systems and mostly counter top models due to heat generated, 3. generates heat in your home, 5. can be noisy in their operation, 4. require maintenance due to scaling on the elements.  5. POE systems are rarely requested or built, 6. there is a danger of getting burned or scalded.

General Maintenance: POU systems require maintenance every other week, including draining the system completely, then every 6 months the heating tank must be disassembled, cleaned of scale and centralization, then descaled with vinegar.

SDPW Maintenance: We provide maintenance on a case by case basis for medically challenged clients.

General Cost: POU Distillation Systems vary in price from $69.00 (single cup manual systems) to $3,000 (20 gallon per day automatic fill systems).   Annual Cost - replacement parts as needed, and they do use a lot of electricity.

De-Ionization Post Reverse Osmosis
Uncommon - Second Best At Removing Fluoride

De-Ionization Post Reverse Osmosis

Second Best At Removing Fluoride
Fluoride Removal:  99% Moving Water – 99% Standing Water

Commercially: POE - The Standard of All Commercial/Industrial UltraPurification Systems
Residentially: Point of Use (POU) - Very Rare : Point of Entry (POE) - Full Medical Systems Only

De-Ionization Post Reverse Osmosis (R/O) removes 99.9% of the Fluoride in your water, 99% of ions and salts in the water, most commonly used for laboratory water and industrial uses..   Point of entry (POE) systems are considered the ultimate of home water purification.  This water will give you spot free rinsing on your black car on a sunny day.

The major advantages of De-Ionization Post Reverse Osmosis are:  1. we know exactly what it will do, the water and purity it produces, 2. maintenance is easy and relatively inexpensive when compared to other methods, 3. R/O units are easy to test and diagnose, 4. the equipment lasts for over ten years easily.

The major benefits of R/O are: 1. the water taste spectacular, 2. the water is ultra pure and healthy, 3. it produces no scale, so whole house R/O systems (POE or point of entry) protect your pipes, fittings, appliances, faucets, tub and tile.

The major drawbacks of R/O systems are: 1. they can waste water, some lower quality systems when tested waste 10 to 20 gallons of water per gallon of purified water produced,  R/O does not do well with Chlorine or Chloramines, Ammonia, bacteria or viruses, these things need to be addressed in all R/O systems,  3. R/O generally produce low pH water with no minerals or Calcium which is unhealthy for anyone to drink, 4. POE R/O Systems have a high initial costs (equipment) compared to other methods, 5. POE R/O System take up more space than other methods.

POU systems generally reduce Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels down to ZERO parts per million (0 ppm).  POE systems reduce TDS to zero, no dissolved solids, this is an important aspect of POE, we can absolutely control the purification of the water and then we can adjust certain aspects of the water, minerals, pH and alkalinity to create Perfect Water.

General Maintenance: POU systems require maintenance every six months on tap water and generally yearly on well water.  POE systems require inspection/maintenance every six months to insure purification and proper function.

SDPW Maintenance: We inspect and maintain all our POU and POE systems every six months.  Our POU units are serviced at six month intervals with the three pre-filters replaced at each servicing and the two post-filters replaced once a year.   The RO membrane is tested at each servicing.  In our POE systems the pre-filtration carbon unit filtration media is replaced every 5 years, membranes are replaced every three years, (unless failure is tested prior), UV Sanitation system is serviced every six months, UV bulbs replaced every 2 to 3 years as necessary, the re-mineralization and pH adjusting unit is inspected every six months and serviced every year.

General Cost: POU R/O Systems vary in price from (Big Box Stores) $149.00+ and you install yourself up to Culligan's residential R/O Systems at $1,199.00 including installation for their standard R/O unit.  Maintenance cost will vary from $125.00 per year to $250.00 per year.  POE R/O Systems are considered the Rolls Royce of home filtration systems and the retail prices generally start at around $5,000+ for the smallest systems installed.  Maintenance is highly variable and depending on the unit itself you might have to service the system at least every other week to maintain maximum efficiency.

SDPW Cost: Our POU R/O Systems all include a re-mineralization/re-alkalization/pH adjusting cartridge and they vary from $699.00 for our most basic system to $999.00 for our UV Sanitized R/O System or our R/O System with a built in Booster Pump.

Our POE R/O System include computer controlled Commercial R/O units, over-sized Carbon Filters with Digital Contollers for Chlorine and Chloramine removal, Next Technologies Scale Stop to eliminate scaling and membrane fouling, a UV Steralization Unit to guarantee your health safety, a Re-Mineralization/Alkalization/pH Adjusting Filter, a water storage tank and a re-pressurization pump.  Our POE R/O Systems start at $4,800.  All our POE R/O systems can be installed with our zero waste modules where we collect all the waste water and water your landscape with it.

Reverse Osmosis Most Common - Third Best At Removing Fluoride

Reverse Osmosis

Third Best At Removing Fluoride
Fluoride Removal: 97% to 99% Moving Water – 97% to 99% Standing Water

Commercially: POE - The Standard of All Commercial/Industrial UltraPurification Systems
Residentially: Point of Use (POU) - The Standard : Point of Entry (POE) - The Best Solution

Reverse Osmosis (R/O) removes 97% to 100% of the Fluoride in your water, most ions and salts in the water, most commonly used as a point of use (POU or under the sink) solution.   Point of entry (POE) systems are considered the Rolls Royce of home water purification.

The major advantages of Reverse Osmosis are:  1. we know exactly what it will do, the water and purity it produces, 2. maintenance is easy and relatively inexpensive when compared to other methods, 3.

The major drawbacks of R/O systems are: 1. they can waste a lot of water, some lower quality systems when tested waste 10 to 20 gallons of water per gallon of purified water produced,  R/O does not do well with Chlorine or Chloramines, Ammonia, bacteria or viruses, these things need to be addressed in all R/O systems,  3. R/O generally produce low pH water with no minerals or Calcium which is unhealthy for anyone to drink, 4. POE R/O Systems have a high initial costs (equipment) compared to other methods, 5. POE R/O System take up more space than other methods.

POU systems generally reduce Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels down to 5 parts per million (5 ppm) in your better systems, and in lower quality systems that numbers is 16 to 25 ppm.

SDPW Cost: Our POU R/O Systems all include a re-mineralization/re-alkalization/pH adjusting cartridge and they vary from $449.00 for our most basic system to $999.00 for our UV Sanitized R/O System or our R/O System with a built in Booster Pump.

Our POE R/O Systems start at $4,800.00.  All our POE R/O systems can be installed with our zero waste modules where we collect all the waste water and water your landscape with it.

HealthGuard Total Toxin Filtration System -
An SDPW Exclusive - Fourth Best At Removing Fluoride

HealthGuard - HG - FluoriGone  – Fluoride Removal Resin - FG + RAA + pH neutraliztion & re-mineraliztion

Third Best At Removing Fluoride

Fluoride Removal: 91% or More - Moving Water – 99%+ Standing Water

Commercially: POE – Would Use RO Instead  -  POU Not Possible

Residentially:  POE – Only By SDPW  -  POU Not Possible

HealthGuard System HG - FluoriGone - FG refers to a proprietary blend of Fluoride, Arsenic, Anion and Cation Removal Resins used by San Diego Pure Water (SDPW) to remove Fluoride in residential applications.  This media is NSF Certified and ANSI Certified for Water Purification Use.  This media is Re-Generated with Sodium Chloride (Salt) and Re-Generates in a manner similar to a Softener.  In counties that have out-lawed salt re-generated water softeners these systems are not allowed.

The Major Advantages of HG: 1. Can remove Fluoride to relatively high levels (91%+), 2. FG can be effectively used over and over again through Salt Re-Generation; this media can be used for 10+ years in constant service.  3. This systems overall cost is 1/2 that of other methods of Fluoride Removal.

The Major Drawbacks of HG: 1. Requires maintenance and inspection at least every 6 months, 2. Requires salt monthly for re-generation, 3. Adds Sodium to the water as it removes Fluoride, (A health issue), 4. Requires the use of a Reverse Osmosis Filter for Drinking Water.

General Maintenance: POU – This media cannot be used as a POU solution, as a POE solution this media is highly effective and extremely inexpensive to operate.  FG resin will last up to ten years.

SDPW Maintenance: We inspect and maintain POE systems every six months.  Our POU units are serviced at six month intervals.  In our POE systems we inspect and test for performance every six months.  We regenerate the RAA when Fluoride leakage is present.

General Cost: This system is an exclusive product of San Diego Pure Water.

SDPW Cost: Our POE HealthGuard System's base cost is offered by written proposal only after a physical inspection of your plumbing and a discussion of you water purification needs and wants.   Annual Cost $600 per year.

Activated Alumina
Not Good At Removing Fluoride In Southern California
Too Expensive To Use - More Expensive Than RO

Activated Alumina – AA

Fluoride Removal: 95% to 99% Moving Water - 97% to 99% Standing Water

Commercially: POE - Very Common Outside The U.S.

Residentially: POU - Very Uncommon – Only used in Highest Quality POU systems

Activated Alumina or AA refers to a highly refined form of Aluminum Oxide that is manufactured for water purification purposes, it is not water soluble, it does not impart Aluminum into the water when used as claimed as a scare tactic by those promoting Bone Char Carbon.   Re-Activation refers to taking plain Activated Alumina and treating it with Caustic Soda to De-Activate it and then Re-Activating it with an acid or Aluminum Sulfate.  It was discovered in the late 1970’s that by doing this chemical process on the Activated Alumina you increase the media’s Fluoride removal capacity by close to 100% and it’s efficiency to remove Fluoride by 100%.

The Major Advantages of AA: 1. Can remove Fluoride to non-detect levels (100% in layman terms but we are not allowed to say that legally), 2. Minimal flavor effect on drinking water when used, (NSF certified for Water Purification and Taste), but it does make the water taste a little flat to be honest.  3. RAA can be recycled over and over again; this media can be used for 10 to 20 years so while it is mined it is recyclable and eco-friendly. 4. It is safe and has been tested in University studies not to add any toxic chemicals to drinking water.  It does not leach Aluminum into drinking water.

The Major Drawbacks of AA: 1. Requires maintenance and inspection at least every 6 months, 2. In most municipal water districts with pH’s above 7.2 the alkaline Ions of the water will compete with the Fluoride for removal, this lowers the Fluoride removal capacity by up to 80%, the higher your alkalinity the faster you need to Re-Activate your RAA.  At $600 per Re-Activation this can get really expensive and make RAA cost prohibitive. 3. High cost – at $400 per cubic foot this is one of the most expensive filtration medias available, when compared to Granulated Activated Carbon costing $25 to $200 per cubic foot, and yes that is a wholesale price.  4.  Water flow is limited to no more than one gallon per minute per cubic foot of AA, at water flows of 2 GPM the efficiency of the media to remove Fluoride is reduced by 50%, at 3 GPM it is reduced by 80+%.

General Maintenance: POU systems require maintenance every six months on tap water and generally yearly on well water.  If tested in San Diego Tap water it will not work most of the time due to high pH.   POE systems require inspection/maintenance every six months to insure purification and proper function.

SDPW Maintenance: We inspect and maintain all our POU and POE systems every six months.  Our POU units are serviced at six month intervals.   In our POE systems we inspect and test the systems every six months.  We regenerate the RAA when Fluoride leakage is present.

General Cost: POU R/O Systems vary in price from $279.00 to $699.00.    Maintenance cost will vary from $125.00 per year to $250.00 per year.

SDPW Cost: We no longer make POU RAA filters or systems, RO is a much better option in San Diego County.  .  Our Whole House POE Systems have changed this year due to the research and testing that we have done.  We only provide RAA in our HealthGuard Total Toxin Filtration System.  This system solves all the Drawbacks listed above and truly cleans your water.  These systems are custom built to your needs.

Bone Char Carbon
Not Good At Removing Fluoride Period
The Urban Legend Of Brimac Bone Char Carbon

Bone Char Carbon - BCC

Fluoride Removal: 24% Moving Water – 61%+ Standing Water

Commercially: POE - Not Used In Modern Countries But Is Used By The World Health Organization For Rural Areas

Residentially:  POU – Of Non-RO Solutions The Most Common Solution - POE Cheapest Solution - Lowest Performance

Bone Char Carbon - BCC refers to a highly manufactured form of carbon made from animal bones that is mainly manufactured for sugar refining purposes.  The animal bones (you hope only Cattle) are heated to over 1000 degrees in the absence of oxygen.  Bone Char for Fluoride removal is a very specialized media, in a number of studies it has become apparent that the effeciency of different brands of media vary a great deal.  Some do almost nothing.  We have been testing Bone Char Carbon in our lab and have found Bone Char ineffective in removing Fluoride.  Due to this fact we do not sell Bone Char Carbon in any of our products.

The Major Advantages of AA: 1. Can remove Fluoride and other metals  2. Has a minimal flavor effect on drinking water when used, (NSF certified for Water Purification and Taste), but we find that we do not like the taste of it in the water. 3. It is carbon so even when exhausted it is still relatively safe, which is why so many companies sell it.

The Major Drawbacks of AA: 1. Does not remove Fluoride very well, in our testing of residential water in San Diego with running water the effective removal rate is less that 24% on average.  2. Does not taste good, 3. Has been shown to carry bacteria into water systems, 4. Is not vegetarian - this is why some sugars say vegetarian, vegetarian sugars have not been through bone char carbon for clarification purposes.

General Maintenance: POU – if you have this you should change the filters every six months, POE - We suggest that you get a Hanna Fluoride tester and see for yourself.  As Fluoride leakage increases you should call your provider to replace the media.

SDPW Maintenance: We do not sell any systems with Bone Char Carbon.

The Urban Legend: Years ago in Africa there was a Fluoride problem and a group used various types of Carbon to try and remove it.  One carbon did better than any other, it was made by a Scottish company Brimac Carbon Corp.  While this study has never been repeated the bigger problem is Brimac Carbon Corp has gone out of business.  The carbon is no longer available.

We will bet you $100.00 that your Bone Char Carbon Filter is less than 50% effective

and we will come out and test it for you free of charge!
