City water officials started adding Fluoride to our water in January 2011 so if you have a whole house system now we can pretty much promise you that it does not remove most of the Fluoride from your water! Yes even those $4,000 to $8,000 systems do not remove Fluoride.
Fluoride is added to our in San Diego water as a medical treatment for a non-waterborne disease, tooth decay, but, there are more studies that dispute this than uphold it. The dosage is controlled only by consumption so, the more water you drink the higher the dose.
Dr. Hans Moolenburgh’s research found that up to 4 percent of people drinking and bathing with fluoridated water experienced health problems. These problems ranged from gastrointestinal disorders to mouth sores to rashes to headaches to forms of arthritis to more serious concerns such as cancers and neurological complaints.
Fluoride can be one of the most volatile and active harmful chemicals in the body. Fluoride can attack mercilessly, against any age group, but its effects are especially harmful to developing children and the elderly. The detrimental effects of fluoride are varied. Below is a list of some of the recently documented, harmful effects of drinking fluoridated water:
Fluoride is known to cause dental fluorosis, a defect of the tooth enamel caused by fluoride’s interference with developing teeth. Its visible signs are mottled or yellowed teeth. Nearly 30% of children drinking fluoridated water suffer from dental fluorosis on two or more teeth (Hileman, 1988).
Fluoride is associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Fluoride enters the brain and enables aluminum to cross the blood-brain barrier, resulting in increased risk for these diseases. Fluoride has also been associated with low IQ and mental retardation in children (Hileman, 1988).
Fluoride can cause a crippling bone disease called skeletal fluorosis. In more mild forms, symptoms of this disease include chronic joint pain, similar to the symptoms of arthritis. Arthritis has now reached near epidemic levels in the United States, and the connection to fluoridated water should be considered.
Fluoride depresses the activity of the human thyroid gland and has been commonly used as an effective treatment for patients with overactive thyroids. Fluoride may depress the activity of the healthy thyroid, as well, resulting in an underactive thyroid, a common cause of obesity. More than 20 million people in the United States receive treatment for thyroid problems.
Fluoride disrupts the activity of normally functioning hormones. Fluoride can reduce levels of melatonin, the sleep hormone, in the body, causing chronic insomnia (Hileman, 1988).
Most European countries have now rejected the process of water fluoridation. Their children’s teeth have not suffered from this rejection. The cost/benefit ratio of fluoridated water no longer warrants the presence of fluoride in drinking water.
Free Radical: Fluoride is one of the strongest free radicals that is found in nature!
Babies: Babies on formula receive the highest dosage of anyone, up to 300 times the dose of breast-fed babies if the breast-feeding mother drinks fluoride!
In addition to IQ studies, 3 studies (Yu 1996; Du 1992; Han 1989) have found that fluoride accumulates in the brain of the fetus, causing damage to cells and neurotransmitters and 1 study (Li 2004) has found a correlation between exposure to fluoride during fetal development and behavioral deficits among neonates.
Children: Fluoride may lower a child’s IQ according to 24 independent studies that
have reported an association between fluoride exposure and reduced IQ.
Alzheimer’s: Fluoride accumulates in the body according to the National Research Council “it is apparent that fluorides interfere with brain functions,” and it adds to the formation of beta-amyloid deposits which are associated with Alzheimer’s.
Pregnancy: Three studies have found a link between prenatal fluoride and fetal brain damage.
Thyroid Function: Fluoride was prescribed for overactive thyroid problems in the early 1900’s and our water is dosing us at those levels today. There is an increasing problem with underactive thyroid in the US. Symptoms include depression, fatigue, weight gain, muscle and joint pain, raised cholesterol and heart disease.
Reproduction: Fluoride has been shown to wreak havoc on the male reproductive system, damaging sperm and increasing the rate of infertility in many species.
Several recent studies have found that even adult exposures to fluoride may result in central nervous system disturbances, particularly among industrial workers.
The findings of neurological effects in fluoride-exposed humans is consistent with, and strengthened by, recent findings from over 40 animal studies published since 1992. As with the studies on humans, the studies on animals have reported an impairment in learning and memory processes among the fluoride-treated groups.
The animal studies have also documented considerable evidence of direct toxic effects of fluoride on brain tissue, even at levels as low as 1 ppm fluoride in water (Varner 1998). These effects include:
-- reduction in nicotinic acetylcholine receptors;
-- reduction in lipid content;
-- impaired anti-oxidant defense systems;
-- damage to the hippocampus;
-- damage to the purkinje cells;
-- increased uptake of aluminum;
-- formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer's disease);
-- exacerbation of lesions induced by iodine deficiency; and
-- accumulation of fluoride in the pineal gland
